Card 56 – Series 1

Organic agriculture

Carrots, not sticks.

The forerunners of modern organic food can be found at least in part in the settlement on Monte Verità in Ticino, whose inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century combined nutrition and awareness. Today, organic products account for almost 9% of total food sales in Switzerland and 14% of agricultural land is farmed organically (as of 2017). In global terms, the Swiss spend the most per capita money on organic products. Prospective farmers can attend the Federal certificate of proficiency training course for farmers with a focus on organic farming.
